Irshad Manji Book Pick - The Daily Beast
Any book that grabs my overworked students gets my recommendation. Philosopher Susan Neiman, director of the Einstein Forum in Potsdam, Germany, compels critical thinking with the book Moral Clarity: A Guide for Grown-Up Idealists. A happy Democrat who refuses to become a partisan pugilist, she offers insights into savvy and ethical activism. Among the lessons that have rocked my class: Today’s liberals make a dangerous mistake in downplaying the threat of Islamism out of hatred for George W. Bush, since the first people to suffer under Islamist regimes are Muslim women and minorities—constituencies supposedly embraced by the Left. Sounds obvious, but to a generation steeped in anti-Bush bravado, it’s a freaking revelation.
